Green IT News

Green IT News

Highlights of the year 2016 were the presentation of our services at the CeBIT 2016 in Hannover, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green IT Amsterdam about future common projects and the use of our green data center assessments by a campaign of EnergieSchweiz.

There are good news about the development of the CO2 footprint of the largest Internet Data Centers. For example Google announced that it will achieve 100 percent renewable energy in 2017.

On the other hand there is still a lot of work to be done, for example to stabilize the increasing energy use in communication networks, company embedded data centers and IT in the office. The ICT community could and should provide a more creative and pro-active support of the businesses with sustainable and energy saving ICT solutions.

Thanks to a number of workshops with active participation of 12 members of the team the new vision, strategy and organization of the Green IT Special Interest Group (SIG) takes shape. We will present the results to prospects and new members in 2017 in order to increase the Green IT impact in Switzerland.

In 2017 we plan to establish a co-operation with the Sustainability for London (SFL) organization which grew itself out of the British Computer Society. Then we plan to become a partner of the new GeSI SMARTer2030 Green IT Action Coalition which was established at the occasion of COP22 in Morocco.
For 2017, we are planning to make a few staff changes!

We are looking for persons to fill the following positions by Green IT:

  • A Green IT SIG part time (30%) support person to assist us with all the administrative jobs, such as ongoing member contacts, maintenance of the website (webmaster), organisation and minutes of meetings, preparation of flyers and slides, etc. This is a paid job.
  • The successor of the president of the Green IT SIG to be worked in in 2017 to be fully operational in 2018. This is for the time being not a paid job.

If any SI member is interested in one of these functions please contact Niklaus Meyer (niklaus.meyer@acm.org).
