In the preface to his Ethics, the philosopher Benedict de Spinoza (1632-1677) wrote: “I shall consider human actions and desires in exactly the same manner, as though I were concerned with lines, planes, and solids.”
Published in Latin in 1677, the Ethics intends to demonstrate „in the manner of surveyors“ not only the existence of God, the nature and the origin of the human mind, but still the way which leads „as by the hand“ to salvation and bliss.
Taking the initial inspiration from the sentence quoted above, an approach was taken using digital tools to create an application that would allow readers to approach the text in more visual and tactile manner.
The endeavor resulted in “Ethica”, a free net-based application that works on any smartphone. Taken as a whole, Ethica, it can be understood as proposal for the creation of a digital of Spinonza’s Ethics as an augmented edition involving graphical visualization that allow the user to approach the text without the standard obstacles one encounters in a printed version of the work.
The visualization of the text is unprecedented and thanks to this, it is possible using the application to visually reveal the demonstrative network that permeates through out Spinoza’s work, which the user, in an innovative and intuitive way, can read as well as see the text in a free exportation
The application Ethica was created by author Patrick Fontana and a production team made up of Emmanuel Ryz Bachir Soussi Hiadmi and Kevin Tessier and is offered free of charge and will be of interest to philosophers, researchers, students, and to all those who are curious about, specialists in, or who are simply lovers of Spinoza’ work.
